Women spend 182,000 on make-up and beauty products over their lifetime - more than some people spend on a house. The figure does not include plastic surgery or cosmetic dental work.
But with more women in favour of nip and tuck, the true cost is certain to be higher.
The average monthly spend on cosmetics is 77, according to the 2006 Beauty Survey, commissioned by New Woman magazine. More than 80 per cent of women wear make-up every day and more than 50 per cent said they would not leave the house without their "face" on.
"We love our make-up," said editor Helen Johnson. "You wake up looking like the morning after the night before, but a quick rummage though a make-up bag and suddenly you're Kate Moss.
"Just buying make-up and putting it on makes women feel good. Beauty products and treatments are a girl's best friend. "We've never had so much choice and it has never been easier to enhance what Mother Nature gave us.
"It doesn't matter if it's piggy eyes or thin lips it's easy to fix - and we can all achieve celebrity glamour with the sweep of a mascara brush."
Almost all women said make-up makes them feel better looking - and just one per cent said they never wear it.
Only six per cent said they feel confident if their face is bare -though 81 per cent said they did not mind if their boyfriend or husband saw them without full make-up.
