UNIT EIGHT
Part One
Warm Up
Dialogue 1

A: What are you wearing that⑴outfit for? You really look ⑵ridiculous.
B: That’s all I can ⑶tolerate! ⑷Catch you later.
A: Ok, don’t get upset. Look, we just ⑸hang around here…it is the best spot to look for ⑹chicks.
B: What do I do if one ⑺gives me the eye?
A: *Just go up and talk to her. It’s not a big problem!
B: *Absolutely not! I’d chicken out. Don’t you ever get scared of girls?
A: Never! I’ll get you a drink…with ice. How does that sound?
B: Oh, great. I’ll get totally drunk, walk right up to her then ⑻vomit on her foot. Do we have to stay here?
A: Calm down! We’re staying here all night.
B: Look! Isn’t that girl who had a mad crush on you, you know, the one you ⑼blew off in order to take out her roommate?
A: Oh, no, if she finds me here, I’m dead. She’s coming this way! ⑽Yikes! Let’s get out of here?
B: Hold on (wait)! *What was that about never being scared of a chick?
A: *Only the kind that can’t beat me up. Come on, let’s move.
Dialogue 2

A: Gee, You’ve hardly got anything on your ⑴tray.
B: Yeah, ⑵I guess I am just not that hungry.
A: What’s the matter? Aren’t you feeling well?
B: Well, no, I’ve been really worried. It’s my car. It’s in the shop again.
A: ⑶No kidding? What’s wrong this time?
B: Something’s wrong with the brakes, I think.
A: Well, at least that shouldn’t cost you mush to fix.
B: The mechanic said he would call me with a ⑷estimate later on today.
A: Watch out he doesn’t try to⑸ take advantage of you.
B: What do you mean?
A: Ok, some car mechanics, if they think that someone doesn’t know much about cars, they might try to take advantage of you.
B: *Maybe so, but I trust this guy, ‘cause he was recommended by one of my neighbors.
A: *That’s good to know. Maybe I’ll try using him in the future.

Dialogue 3

Kathleen: Do you remember me? From the bookstore.
Joe: Of course, ⑴I remember you, ⑵yes, hi!
Kathleen: Hi! How’s your aunt?
Joe: She’s great. Thanks. ⑶I’d better go deliver this. I have a very ⑷thirsty date, ⑸she’s part camel.
Kathleen: *Joe, right? Joe, isn’t it?
Joe: And you are Kathleen.
Kathleen: Kathleen Kelly.
Part Two
Everyday Expression

Small Talk 1:
Jane: It would be interesting to live in the countryside, don’t you think?
Bob: Well, you’re probably right.
Jane: You seem to have some reservations.
Bob: Actually, I feel living far from the city is not so convenient, honey.
Jane: Is that more important than the fresh air and blue sky then?
Bob: Well, I didn’t say that.
Small Talk 2:
A: I’d like to know if you would give you consent to their plan?
B: I agree on the whole, but things are not so easy.
A: Are there any problems?
B: I wouldn’t make conclusions without close study but I guess the plan isn’t really practical.
Small Talk 3:
A: Wouldn’t you say that John is our best friend?
B: You know that’s exactly what I think.
A: He’s getting very popular here and I think people like him for a good reason.
B: Absolutely.
Small Talk 4:
A: Can I ask you if you would agree that classical music is more thoughtful?
B: As a matter of fact, I just couldn’t agree more.
A: So who is your favorite German composer in nineteenth century?
B: I’m afraid it’s so difficult to choose from such a long list as mine.
Small Talk 5:
A: People tend to spend money rather than save it, right?
B: Could be, but I’m not so experienced.
A: I see your point, but I’m talking about some common sense.
B: Ok, I guess you’re right.
