1. I’m Starving
我饿死了

BACKGROUND 背景

Two friends after work are deciding on what to do for dinner.
两个朋友下班后正在决定吃什么晚餐。


A: I’m starving to death. What about you?
我饿死了。你呢?

B: Yeah, I’m starving too! Where do you want to have dinner?
我也是,我快饿死了。你想去哪儿吃?

A: I don’t know.

B: What do you feel like eating?
你想吃什么呢?

A: Every now and then I get hungry for spicy food.
一段时间不吃辣的我就馋。

B: There’s a really good Sichuan restaurant near here. Let’s go there sometime.
附近有家非常不错的四川饭馆。我们找个时间去吧。

A: Why not tonight?
今晚为什么不去?

B: No, not tonight. You have to make reservations in advance. It’s a very popular place. Besides, it’s expensive. And I don’t have any money.

A: I’m broke, too. Let’s save our money and go next week.

B: Okay. But how?

be broke: be without money 破产;身无分文☆☆☆☆

Kim’s Note:
This is a very common expression, but it also is the cause of a very common error. I have met more than one Chinese person who has said they are “broken” instead of “broke”. There is really a big difference!

* I’d like to go to the concert with you, but I’m broke.
我想跟你一起去听演唱会,可是我没钱了。
* Every time I say I want to go out for dinner, my boyfriend says he’s broke.
每次我说要出去吃饭,我男朋友都说他没钱了。
* You can’t be broke. We just got paid yesterday!
你不可能没钱。我们昨天刚发了工资!

do without: live without something 没有……也行☆☆☆
* If there’s not enough cream for the coffee we’ll do without.

* There are some things in life that I just can’t do without.

feel up to: feel about health or ability to do something
