UNIT FIVE
Part One
Warm Up
Dialogue 1
B(Jim)这些天总是愁眉苦脸,因为一个朋友借住他家,却像大爷一样好吃懒做。A建议B找个借口将这个朋友轰走。
A: Hey, Jim. ⑴How come you look so terrible? What’s goin’ on?
B: ⑵You can say that again. Susan’ brother dropped in from out of town, so I offered to put him up for a few days. But he’s *driving me up a wall. This guy is bottomless pit.
A: ⑶How gross! I can’t handle people like that. Does he at least give you a hand around the house?
B: He doesn’t lift a finger! I *bend over backwards cleaning up all day and he sleeps in until noon.
A: Man, what a ⑷freeloader. You better do something quick or he’ll never ⑸hit the road. After all, he’s *got it made in the shade here.
B: You think he might stay even longer?!
A: Now, don’t go *losing your temper. *If you tolerated all you can, just kick him out…but do it with gloves. I know! Tell him ⑹a white lie like you’re getting the house fumigated!
B: That wouldn’t be a lie!
Dialogue 2
学生A(Bob)和学生B(Ellen)都为结束一学期的学习而高兴,相约去听摇滚音乐会,但Bob手头有点拮据。
A: Hi, Ellen! How is it going?
B: *Can’t be better! Bob, aren’t you glad the semester is over?
A: ⑴Yep! Are you going to the rock concert Friday night?
B: I didn’t think much of it. Are you?
A: Sure. ⑵Would you like go with me?
B: Sounds like fun.
A: You’ll have to buy your own ticket though.
B: *Are you broke again? Let me treat you.
A: ⑶Wow! When did you ⑷come into so much cash?
B: You know, I am a waitress at the student center. Anyway now those final exams are almost over. *I’d love a night out.
Dialogue 3
Kathleen去赴约,但对方没有赴约,好友Christina在安慰她。
Christina: So, what happened?
Kathleen: He⑴never came.
Christina: ⑵He stood you up.
Kathleen: I wouldn’t exactly characterize it in that way. I think something happened. Something terrible and unexpected that made it impossible for him to… ⑶what if he showed up, took one look at me and left?
Christina: Not possible.
Kathleen: Maybe, there was a subway accident.
Christina: Absolutely.
Kathleen: A train got trapped underground with him inside.
Christina: And no phone.
Kathleen: And ⑷you know, how those express trains create⑸suction.

Small Talk 1:
George: Hi, Mel, would you like to come and have a cup of coffee this afternoon?
Mel: I’d love to, but you know I’ve got another appointment. I’m really sorry.
George: I see. Then what about tomorrow, at Starbucks?
Mel: I’m afraid not, George. You gotta know something, I’m not available any more.
but I know Becky has a crush on ya.
George: Are you kidding me? Becky? She’s a real bitch.
Small Talk 2:
A: If ever you’re in Chicago, please do look me up.
B: Well, yes, I’d like to, if it’s not too much trouble.
A: No trouble at all. I think maybe you will meet some of my friends here as well.
B: That’d be fine.
Small Talk 3:
A: We thought you might like to participate in our rehearsal.
B: I’m afraid I’m already booked up for next Sunday. But thank you just the same.
A: That’s a pity. We can arrange another time hopefully.
Small Talk 4:
A: Betty and I will throw a dinner party this weekend; we’d like you to come.
B: That would be very nice. Only that I’ll be a little late. Is that OK?
A: Sure. We’ll be looking forward to that day.
B: So will I. Thank you.
Small Talk 5:
A: Like to come over to our fancy dress party?
B: Oh shame! I have a class tomorrow.
A: Well, then join us some other time.
B: Yeah. Thanks. And have fun!
